On March 18, 2026, Google Labs overhauled Stitch — transforming what was a straightforward prompt-to-mockup tool into something far more ambitious.
The new Stitch is an AI-native design environment where you talk to an agent about what you want your app to look and feel like — and it builds it in front of you, in real time.
And it is completely free.
Google Stitch started as Galileo AI, a pioneering generative design tool launched in 2022. Google acquired it in May 2025 and relaunched it at Google I/O 2025, integrating it with Gemini AI.
The March 2026 update is the biggest upgrade since launch, shipping five major features simultaneously.
The new canvas is infinite and AI-native — your ideas have room to grow from early ideation to working prototype in one continuous space. You can bring ideas in any form: images, text, or code. Just drag them onto the canvas and Stitch uses them as context.
A new design agent can reason across your entire project's evolution — understanding not just what you want now but the decisions you made earlier. A new Agent Manager tracks your progress and helps you work on multiple ideas in parallel.
You can now speak directly to your canvas. The AI agent listens, asks clarifying questions, gives real-time design critiques, and makes live updates as you talk. For designers who think better out loud, this changes everything.
Static designs become clickable prototypes automatically. These prototypes can then be exported as working React applications — no developer handoff required.
This is arguably the most technically significant feature. DESIGN.md is a markdown file that captures your entire design system — colors, typography, spacing, component patterns — in a format that AI agents can read and reuse.

Stitch takes this context and generates a design direction. From there, you iterate through conversation — tweaking, asking "what if we tried a darker palette?" or "can this feel more premium?" — and the agent responds with live updates on the canvas.

Stitch puts Google squarely in competition with Figma, Adobe XD, and newer AI tools like Figma Make and Framer AI.
