Google Stitch: The Free AI Design Tool That Turns Ideas Into Apps in Minutes
Design Just Got a Whole Lot Faster
On March 18, 2026, Google Labs overhauled Stitch — transforming what was a straightforward prompt-to-mockup tool into something far more ambitious.
The new Stitch is an AI-native design environment where you talk to an agent about what you want your app to look and feel like — and it builds it in front of you, in real time.
And it is completely free.
What Is Google Stitch?
Google Stitch started as Galileo AI, a pioneering generative design tool launched in 2022. Google acquired it in May 2025 and relaunched it at Google I/O 2025, integrating it with Gemini AI.
The March 2026 update is the biggest upgrade since launch, shipping five major features simultaneously.
The Five Big New Features
1. AI-Native Infinite Canvas
The new canvas is infinite and AI-native — your ideas have room to grow from early ideation to working prototype in one continuous space. You can bring ideas in any form: images, text, or code. Just drag them onto the canvas and Stitch uses them as context.
2. Smarter Design Agent + Agent Manager
A new design agent can reason across your entire project's evolution — understanding not just what you want now but the decisions you made earlier. A new Agent Manager tracks your progress and helps you work on multiple ideas in parallel.
3. Voice Canvas
You can now speak directly to your canvas. The AI agent listens, asks clarifying questions, gives real-time design critiques, and makes live updates as you talk. For designers who think better out loud, this changes everything.
4. Instant Prototyping
Static designs become clickable prototypes automatically. These prototypes can then be exported as working React applications — no developer handoff required.
5. DESIGN.md
This is arguably the most technically significant feature. DESIGN.md is a markdown file that captures your entire design system — colors, typography, spacing, component patterns — in a format that AI agents can read and reuse.
You can:
- Extract a design system from any existing URL
- Save it as a DESIGN.md file
- Import it into other Stitch projects
- Pass it to coding tools like Cursor or Claude to maintain visual consistency in code
How Vibe Design Works
Instead of starting with wireframes, you start with intent:
- What is the business objective?
- What should users feel when they use this?
- What products or websites are inspiring you right now?
Stitch takes this context and generates a design direction. From there, you iterate through conversation — tweaking, asking "what if we tried a darker palette?" or "can this feel more premium?" — and the agent responds with live updates on the canvas.
This approach — called vibe design — is faster than traditional wireframing and produces better starting points because it focuses on outcomes before details.
Developer Integration
Stitch connects directly to the tools developers already use:
- MCP server connects Stitch to AI Studio, Cursor, Claude, or any coding agent
- Designs export as working React applications
- Works with Antigravity (Google's new app development tool)
- The DESIGN.md file keeps design and code in sync
How Much Does It Cost?
Stitch is free. No credit card required.
| Plan | Generations per Month | Model | |------|----------------------|-------| | Standard | 350 | Gemini 2.5 Flash | | Experimental | 50 | Gemini 2.5 Pro |
Who Should Use Stitch?
- Founders and entrepreneurs who need to prototype product ideas quickly
- Designers looking to accelerate their workflow and explore more ideas faster
- Developers who want to go from concept to React component without a designer
- Marketers and business owners who need landing pages and app mockups without agency costs
The Competitive Picture
Stitch puts Google squarely in competition with Figma, Adobe XD, and newer AI tools like Figma Make and Framer AI.
Figma has the advantage of an established ecosystem and deep integration with existing design workflows. But Stitch has something Figma does not: Gemini's multimodal AI running natively inside the design environment, and the backing of Google's infrastructure.
For Indian startups and businesses building digital products, Stitch represents a meaningful reduction in the cost and time required to get from idea to prototype.
